Film: Rehearsals

Rehearsals:

What went well:
As a group we had already sorted who says what and when they say it. Therefore, there wasn't much changing that we had to do when it got to filming. The camera that we used to film was very helpful as it was in HD and picked up all of our facial expressions and body language clearly. There was a mic connected to the camera which ensured that we will still be heard when cars drove past. This helped a lot as it meant we wouldn't have to keep re-filming a scene due to the noise in the background.

Film: Evaluation

What have you learned?
I have learnt the different purposes of horror films. Horror movies are mainly created to give a since of intimidation for the audience and also create fear and to get them scared. I've learnt about horror conventions, the sub genres, different types of openings and posters. I've learnt how camera shots, angles and movements play a big part in horror movies. If a camera gradually moves towards a certain place then as an audience we would expect there to be something in the direction the camera is panning to. Close ups and zoom ins are effective for horror movies to show an object of significance or even show blood and injuries or paranormal activities. Low angles could be used to show hierarchy. Editing is also significant as dissolving in and out, straight cut, jump cut, and wipe left/right. Editing helps in situations such as, if the horror movie wants to quickly and efficiently move from one scene to another, a jump cut would be used. Dissolving out could be used if someone has just died and they want to move to the next scene. Jump cuts are the most successful when it comes to a jump scare horror movie to show the tension in a scene. For instance, in the horror movie psycho shower scene there's jump cuts between the knife and the character in the shower. This could cause tension for the audience as the character who could possibly be effected by the weapon isn't aware of it. Diegetic sound are sounds such as: screaming, crying, footsteps, creaky doors, and weapons. Non-diegetic sounds are: dramatic music. Props help make a successful horror movie such as: knifes.
How will it help you?
The research and information that I learned through out the start of this course is going to help with the making of my groups short horror film. The props, camera shots, angles and movement, editing and sound will helps with making the movie scary and successful. The way props are going to be used is Jogesh's clown costume and clown mask. Camera shot sizes could be used when showing someones dead on the floor with the clown standing above them. Editing will be used when there's an object of significance - jump cut will show the object then the person who found the object and their reaction.
How have you learned it?
I learned this information while researching and horror conventions.

Film: Props Planning (Mise En Scene)

For our horror movie we need specific crops to have a successful horror movie. The props included are: camera, camera microphone, clown mask, clown costume, fake blood, fake knife, balloons, lights and a jack in the box.

Camera/Microphone:
Image result for cameraImage result for microphone for the camera
The camera has better display images. The HD camera appears as natural as possible. The microphone helps pick up sounds naturally. This helps the sounds sound realistic and helps the audience engage with the sounding.

Fake blood:
Image result for FAKE BLOOD
The fake blood helps to have cuts and killing visible and obvious. This would give the illusion that someone has been stabbed and slaughtered. This would reassure the audience the genre of the movie - paranormal/slasher.

Machete:
Image result for macheteImage result for scary guy with machete

This fake machete would go with the conventions of a horror movie with the villain. This machete could be used to portray pain and killing. This weapon would portray fear from the victims.

Balloons:
Image result for clown with balloons

Balloons are required as they're the main prop that start off the horror movie. Balloons are used for decorations usually for a happy event like a birthday. Usually clowns show up with their balloons and other props but their main prop is a balloon. Therefore, this could help make the clown seem more realistic.

Lights:
Image result for spot lights scary movie

Throughout our film low key lighting will be used. This is because our film will be filmed in the dark at night. Lowkey lighting will help to show the characters faces but not be too bright to the point where it looks like its day light. Darkness could give the audience a fear of the unknown. The audience will be taken by surprise when they see little crops such as: balloons etc in the lowkey lighting.

Jack in the box:
Image result for jack in the box scary#

The jack in the box could be used as a prop by Rhia when she sees Myles' body. She will see this prop then see the clown in the reflection of the mirror. This prop is important as it leads to Rhias death and also follows after Myles' death. This prop could give a more realistic approach between the clown and his random appearances.

Film: Location/Setting (Mise En Scene)

The shot of this alley is a extreme long shot which leads to a park. This could be a location for our horror film. This is because its empty, dark, scary and isolated. This location could link to sinister things happening in the dark, murders and spirits. Also this fits well with our main plot idea because there is a tree near by so the balloon that Myles finds could be there.

This shot is also a extreme long shot of an alley/the bridge at a park. We would consider this as being a location for our short horror film. This is because the fence/gate could indicate that there's someone/something on the other side of it. There is also trees near by this shot too so the plan of the balloon with Myles would be a success with this location too.

This shot is also a extreme long shot of a railway stairway which could be a location for when me and Santiago (Vijender) are being chased by the clown after the death of Rhia and Myles. This location is downhill which would make it easier for us to run down but also increases the chance of us falling which could give the sense of tension for the audience. This shot could be from the clowns perspective to show his hierarchy.

This shot is also a extreme long shot and this location could be used whilst the four characters are on their way to the party discussing how good its going to be. This is as the street lighting wouldn't make the location as dark and sinister. The lighting is low key so it wouldn't be too bright and may also give the feeling of suspense. This location gives the sense of a typical atmosphere for young teens to be in before a party as majority of them start late.

This shot of the house is a extreme long shot. This location could be used for when Santiago (Vijender) when hes the last person alive and is running towards the house where the house party was meant to be at. This could be a good location because the house is covered by trees and may suggest that this house has some sort of sinister background and isn't safe but he takes the chance anyway. By the looks of the house it could indicate that Santiago (Vijender) should not enter the house.

Film: Storyboard (Mise En Scene)

In the opening scene the four friends are on their way to a party. Myles begins to start joking about a wolf and Rhia begins to get scared. An establishing shot will be used so that the whole opening scene is shown and the four characters are in the frame. The transitioning at the beginning will be fading in to start the film. This scene will be located in the dark by a park. Eye level angle between Myles and Rhia shows equality between the sexes.

The jumpcut to the next scene shows how Myles has seen a balloon when he tells his friends they don't acknowledge what hes been saying as he lied about seeing a wolf. The close up shot of the balloon portrays the importance of it. This scene will still be in the park however in the frame it will only be the tree, the balloon and Myles. Myles sees the balloon and pops it but nothing happens he sees another balloon and then the scene changes. The jumpcut to the next scene will cut to a long shot of the clown standing over Myles' dead body on the floor. This shows the importance of the balloon. The location will be the same as scene 2. The key props in this scene is the balloons, the clown mask and the clown costume with the machete and also fake blood. When Myles pops the second balloon the clown comes out from behind the balloon and stabs Myles to death.

In this scene Rhia, Santiago, and Helena come running when they realise that Myles is missing and when they heard screams from when he was getting stabbed by the clown. The extreme shot shows the facial expression of all the characters when they see Myles lying on the floor dead. The location of this scene is the same as the location in the previous scene however, the key prop in the scene is the jack in the box near his dead body which only Rhia notices. A point of view shot will be used to show what Rhia is seeing when she picks the jack in the box up. Also an over the shoulder shot will be used when she opens the jack in the box and sees the clown in the mirrors reflection. The camera shots, angles and movements will be different for this scene. The camera will jump from the prop to Myles' dead body. Close ups of Rhias facial expressions will be shown. In the same location, the clown kills Rhia. Helena and Santiago will run away from the scene. In this scene a clown circus theme will be edited in (non-diegetic) to show how killing Rhia is amusement for the clown. Medium close up of the clowns face will show his happiness and craze of how much joy hes getting out of killing the innocent teenagers. An extreme long shot will show Helena and Santiago running away from the clown whilst he stands over her body.

In this scene Helena and Santiago have just ran away from the clown. Santiago tells Helena to go and get help and states that he will try his best to distract the clown if he crosses paths with him. The close up of the characters will show their heavy panting. The location changed from the park to a street. Santiago then begins to wonder where Helena's been for so long. He rings her to see if shes found any help. The close up of Santiago's face will show his concern for Helena. The close up of the prop which is a phone would show hes eager to get in touch with Helena. He begins to get worried as he gets no answer from Helena. The long shot will show his back against a wall feeling worthless. Then the clown finally answers the phone from Santiago and tells him that he's next. The machete prop in his hands and Helena dead on the floor implies that hes killed Helena. The long shot of the clown's body over Helena would show the audience that he killed her. The jumpcuts from the phone to the machete and lastly to Helenas body on the floor.

In these scenes Santiago is found running to the house where the house party was originally meant to be at. Hes hoping to get help and the extreme long shot would show the setting of the house and the directions in which hes heading. The long shot of the clown would show that hes spotted Santiago and begins to head in his direction. The location would be on the street where houses are present. This scene would fade in after the previous scene to show darkness around him. The jumpshot from Santiago entering the house to the living room will be edited in. The long shot will show the surroundings in the room and have close ups of both the clown and Santiago. Here there are props such as; the balloon. The low angle show would show Santiago's vulnerability in front of the clown and also show hierachy.

Film: Character Profiles (Mise En Scene Elements)

Powered by emaze Powered by emaze

Film: Audience and Research

My group and our short horror film:
There are 4 people in my group and were each going to play different roles to contribute to our short horror film. Jogesh is going to be in charge of the camera shots and angles, Vijender is in charge of the editing, Rhia is in charge of the sound and I'm in charge of the mise en scene. This includes: settings and props, costume, hair and make up, facial expressions and body language, lighting, positioning of characters/objects in the frame and location.

Short Horror Movie Ideas:

Idea one:
Our groups first idea was to create something within the sub genre of paranormal. We agreed that paranormal will be more successful as we could have someone who was possessed by a spirit/demon. This plot has characters that are, Vijender as Ben, Jogesh as Rocco, Rhia as Sharon and me as Lisa and as a group of friends we all go to a camping expedition. The location was decided to be a park at night where the group of friends would be camping. We chose the park so that the mise en scene of green grass and bushes around gave the illusion of us actually being in woods. The plot was that I decide to get some fresh air and I hear something rustling and I begin to realise I'm not the only one away from the tent. I find a book on the floor and when I open it the evil entity within the book possesses me. I come back to the tent and Ben realises I'm not acting normal however, Rocco and Sharon brush it off and show no interest. Ben tries to keep a close eye on Lisa but gets too close and eventually gets killed by Lisa. When Rocco and Sharon wake up they think he committed suicide and then they're killed by the evil spirit within Lisa.

Idea two:
The other idea we put together was also in the sub genre of paranormal. From our individual research we get that paranormal films are more terrifying over other sub genres. The characters are, Vijender as Tom, Jogesh as Harry, and me as Julie. This plot is that were walking home after watching a scary movie at the cinema. Me and Harry are too engaged in our conversation so were ahead of Tom but hes left staring at an old woman in the windows (Rhia) whose knocking on the windows. The old woman begins screaming and banging on the windows and yelling for help. Due to our curiosity we decided to walk towards the window where she was screaming. For a few minutes of us standing there she just screamed. We decided to walk away from the old woman but then she started chanting "she is coming." We all asked whose coming and she screamed "Romilda." The woman suddenly passed away and we all ran and decided to walk back down that road later. However, the same woman was banging on the window again, but this time it was Romilda whose an old possessed entity who consumes people one by one.

 Idea three:

Lastly, after seeing the most recent issue in America we've noticed how scary and terrifying. They were found lingering into the woods and streets in the dark. This has now evolved into murders, stabbings and stalkers. The clown 'trend' managed to spread to the UK and other countries around the world. This gave us an idea of clowns, the characters are: Vijender as Mike, Rhia as Becky, me as Trisha, and Myles (external character) who have just finished from a late birthday party. They walk down the street on a cold and foggy night. Myles is the first person to see a symbol which is a balloon. After a while all four of us see it. Myles who starts to get annoyed pops the balloon which triggers the killer clown (Jogesh) who kills Myles while laughing historically. The rest try to run and hide but the clown hunts them down and kills them one by one.

Questionnaire:

I included two questionnaires. One was the one i created on survey monkey and the other was the group questionnaire that we received answers via video.

Create your own user feedback survey

Audience Feedback:

Questionnaire 1 (Youtube) : From the feedback given by the audience who took the questionnaire the most successful scenario was the killer clown plot. This would be efficient because of whats spreading around the world which is the clown scare that started in America earlier this year. I included specific questions that linked back to the main plot to see how successful it would be and to also get more ideas on how to improve the plot. The participants were aged 15-21 years old. This age group is the type to most likely enjoy the movies in the horror genre. This age group includes adults and teens who watch movies with their friends or alone to enjoy the plot. Due to cinema tickets the group that would watch the horror movies in the cinema are group c (working class). However, students could also get student discount on their cinema tickets when they show their student ID badges.

Questionnaire 2: In my questionnaire I asked specific and direct questions that linked to my groups short horror movie plot. From this questionnaire I got back feedback which helped with the plot of the movie. The age group I gave my questionnaire to are 16-25 years old. This is because they would be more likely to enjoy horror films and to also be able to watch them at the cinema due to the ageing.

My Review of Paranormal Activity 3 (Preliminary)

Negative Review of Paranormal Activity 3:

When I watched paranormal activity 3 it was mainly scary due to the jump scares. There weren't many shockingly scary things that occurred in the film, it seemed like any other horror film with jump scares and ghosts. The story line was interesting however, the whole film was based around the past activities that happened when they were younger. It would've been more interesting if they showed how Katie and Kristi felt watching back the videos of their childhood and what occurred when they were younger that they don't remember. The movie makes a jump from the present to past as they went from painting than room for their unborn child to Kristi coming over with boxes of old videos then it transitions into one of the old films. This was confusing and could've been thought out better. There was no transition back to their reactions watching the old videos and realising what happened. They also could've showed paranormal things occurring after they remembered everything that happened. There could've also been a return of 'Koby' to make it scarier. The plot and story line wasn't scary however, the jump scares were. The trailer was scarier than the movie and had scenes in it that weren't even in the movie. Overall I would rate this film a 6/10.

Positive Review of Paranormal Activity 3:

The movie didn't have many positive aspects and the only good thing about the movie is the plot twist that involves the grandma Julie, the jump scares and the way the little girl has the 'friend Koby.' The editing and transitions were well organised. For example, when the mum walked into the kitchen and everything had been lifted off the floor and stuck to the ceiling then all of a sudden it all drops down onto the floor creating tension and a jumpscare.

Paranormal Activity 3 Reviews (Preliminary)

Delivering The Scares (Positive Review)

Author: TourettesPersonal from Philippines

23 October 2011
To be honest, I never liked Paranormal Activity movies. It's about people who lived in a house with cameras and there are evil spirits haunting them then all of the events are caught on tape. The idea is interesting but the execution always end up being unsatisfying. Paranormal Activity 3 is the very beginning of the series. It's not actually a prequel. It's more of a backward trilogy to make the ending of the rest of the Paranormal Activity films mysterious. Although, the twist is a little bit predictable but Paranormal Activity 3 has a decent story to tell with these found footage. And it really has the scares. Finally, this series has a genuine scare.
Paranormal Activity 3 reveals all the mysteries of the first two movies. Unlike the first two, instead of watching the lives of these people and wait for the spirits to come out, this one really tells a story through the videos. The story is not anything new though but the execution is decent. The second Paranormal Activity narrates almost everything in the story. Here you don't need it, you just have to look at the video footage to know the story.
Aside from its storytelling, Paranormal Activity is all about the scares. They improved the scares by moderating the slow burns and keep the objects floating. The ghosts aren't quite invisible like the first two. Here, it's campy. You can see its shadows. And of course, there's a lot of threat from the ghost. The scares are more than just jump scares. It has more terror and gumption to the thrills which is kinda fun. The cameras are well shot. Everything is well made. But the twist remains predictable for some reason.
Paranormal Activity 3 is not earning the fear anymore. It's now earning the scares. It's great to see Paranormal Activity with exact scares than wait for more than five minutes to be scared. It's not the scariest horror movie of the year but it's the best part of the series and also the most decent horror of the year. I still wanna see the parts on the trailer that wasn't show in the actual film but Paranormal Activity 3 is satisfying enough in its short runtime. Decent enough as a found-footage-horror-film.
This review is a positive review on the film Paranormal Activity 3. In this review the person overall found the film interesting and scary with a good story line. This review looks into the story line of the film as this film links back to Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, the film tells a story throughout the clips of the old videos. This review compares this film to the others and what's different and improved.

Different movie than the trailer... (Negative Review)

Author: jmcb002 from United States
21 October 2011
I thought I went to go see Paranormal Activity 3... you know, like the one in the trailer with a seance gone brutally wrong, house on fire, jumping girls from the upper story, medium coming to rid the house of bad spirits, closet ghost knocking games, crying girls huddled in cars, mom being flown out of bedroom, and water being thrown on a ghost to reveal that its shape is actually there. But no, I ended up seeing a crappy excuse for producers thinking they are being creative and edgy by changing it from the trailer and making it a story about satanic women rituals. I've already seen that horrible remake. I wanted to see a Paranormal Activity, not "The Wicker Man / The Last Exorcism". I hope someone sues the creators for false advertising by not making ANY scenes from the trailer into the final cut. That honestly makes me mad. The Paranormal movies were made on the premise of being about a haunting of demons; adding in the "cult" aspect just changes things. We were drawn in on the fear of the supernatural, not satanic women. I want to see the movie from the trailer, not what they decided was the best and scariest cut for theaters, because that version was terrible.
This review is a negative review of Paranormal Activity 3. The person writing this review strongly believes that the trailer was false advertisement and that nothing that occurred in the trailer was in the actual film and that it was all just to get people to watch the movie. After watching the movie, I noticed there were things in the trailer that weren't in the movie. For instance, the water being thrown on the ghost to show the shape of the ghost. I believe the trailer had more exaggerated and scary scenes added so that it was a way to persuade the audience to watch the movie.

Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer 1&2 Analysis (Preliminary)

Watch the trailer of the film and analyse:
In this trailer it begins with a home clip of the two sisters from Sep 03 1988. In the clip they're playing in the garden happily with their family. There was a sudden change of mood when it transitions to a sister speaking saying, "What ever happened to us when we were little, I don't remember..anything. Whatever it was it thrived out of here. The more we paid attention to it the worse it got." Whilst she was speaking there were transitions of different clips such as: old photographs, old clips, clips of the events that occurred whilst they pay attention to the things that happened in the past. The transitions that were used were: cutaway, fading out and fading in. Then there was a clip of the two sisters 5 and 9 years old, doing the "Bloody Mary" challenge in the mirror. This consists of standing in the mirror with the lights off and chanting "bloody Mary" three times. The myth is that a woman will appear in the mirror once the lights are turned back on. However, the older sister played around and tried to scare the little sister by suddenly screaming but not paying attention to what was actually in the mirror and walking out. Then there was a cutaway shot to a black screen with a loud scream. Then to a fuzzing screen of "Paranormal Activity 3." I believe this trailer wasn't as scary as it should've been. However, the different shots of old photos and old clips was effective as it gave us an insight of what was going to be occurring in the movie. I believe the purpose of this trailer was to have mostly scary and creepy clips added that didn't add up. The effect of this was that it would lead the audience to watch the full film when it released in October 2011.
In the second trailer it opens up with another clip of the two sisters in the garden but on Sep 02 1988 then transitions to a video of the two sisters when they're older. One sister had her arms around the other which could symbolise protection. The camera man then states, "somethings going on." He then continues to ask the younger child to show him the 'knocking game' this was where the little girl knocked on the mirrored cupboard and there were two loud knocks coming from the inside. He asks the older sister, "how do you do it?" she seemed clueless and told him to ask her younger sister. He told the younger daughter that he really liked the trick and she angrily replied, "its not a trick." The boyfriend then realises that there is something in the house that is connecting with Kristi. He then sets up the cameras in hopes to find something. Then they all began to see what she was doing and videoed her speaking to "Koby." There was also a clip of her and her mother, she tells her mother her friends there and her mother replied with, "there is no one there" therefore, Kristi threw water towards "Koby's" way and you could see the outline of a suspicious body standing right next to Julie. There was a priest that came over to tell Julie that it's connected to her side of the family then all of a sudden he starts banging his face against the table and books. There was a cutaway shot to the side of Dennis' ribs of a scratch going all the way down with him stating, "something's digging in my side." There were fast cutaway shots and fading out's of different paranormal clips of things setting on fire and bulb's bursting. Then as soon as Julie suggests that they need to get out of the house, a strong force seems to have pushed her all the way back leading her to be thrown on her bed with the doors getting locked. I believe this trailer is more successful than the first trailer as this gave more of a scare to the audience. This one has more clips of the young girl doing abnormal things such as: the knocking. The cutaway shots were effective and also gave a jump scare effect. I believe the purpose of this trailer was to base more around the 'demon friend' Koby and the paranormal things he was performing around the family and the little girl Kristi.
The camera shots in these trailers ranged from extra large shot, large shot, medium large shot, and medium close up. There was a medium close up of the two girls playing in the beginning on the trampoline. The extra large shots were to show the paranormal activities taking place in the old videos of their childhood. There were medium close ups of Kristi's scary facial expressions. This is effective as Kristi was the one with the 'imaginary' friend 'Koby.' Majority of the camera angles are either eye level, low or high. The camera often zoomed into the little girls while they play. While this is being filmed the angles are either high or eye level due to the height difference. The angles were high in the recording footage from the cameras that had been set up in the high angle. The mise en scene in the trailer seemed homely and also safe as the two children had both of their parents playing with them and seemed to have a lot of toys. The mise en scene of the girls rooms and garden made the setting seem more normal for the horror movie. There wasn't any abnormal settings in the trailer for this, it just mostly had clips of when Kristi and Katie when they were little and other clips of the two sisters from when they had abnormal things occurring when they were older. The sounds were loud and sudden which created the effect of a jump scare. There were scary non-diegetic sounds added in to add to the atmosphere. The editing that was used in this trailer was: fade in, fade out, dissolve, and jumpcut. The jumpcut was used as another way of jumpscare in this trailer. Fade in and out were often used in the transition from their old videos to their older selves.

Paranormal Activity 3 (Preliminary)

Paranormal Activity 3 Plot/Background Information:

Paranormal activity is a Joost and Schulman horror film. The plot involves two sisters, Katie and Kristi. Katie delivers a box of old videotapes to her sister Kristi. The videotapes were set in 1988 when the two sisters were aged 5 and 9. The girls mum and boyfriend began to realise something unordinary was taking place in their home, therefore, her boyfriend named Dennis decided to set up cameras around the house. Eventually, a mysterious symbol was drawn on a crack space in the girls' room. Dennis looked into this and found a book about a coven of witches in the 1930s who served demons by brain-washing girls of child-bearing age into having sons for the demon to collect, before wiping away the child-bearer's memory of the event. Dennis tried to show this to Julie (the mother) but she doesn't believe in it. [1] (http://screenrant.com/paranormal-activity-ending-explained-2-kofi-137162/) The demon makes a bond with Kristi, due to the repeated attacks Kristi agrees to listen to all of "Koby's" requests. Julie becomes determined to go to her mothers house, however, it is revealed that Lois (the grandmother) is part of the coven of witches from the '30s that Dennis read about in the book and that she serves the demon terroizing them - she also had the same symbol hidden on her wall. Lois gathered the rest of her coven and watches as the demons kill Julie and Dennis.

Introduction

My name is Helena Madhar and I will be studying A2 Media Studies in Year 13 at Hamstead Hall Academy. This year will involve the making of short horror movie, double page spread and a poster that links to our short horror movie. The research and planning for this will be 20 marks, the main product which is a horror movie will be 40 marks, the ancillary task 1 which is to make the poster for the film will be 10 marks, the ancillary task 2 which is to make a double page spread review of the film will be 10 marks, and the evaluation which consists of 4 questions will be worth 20 marks. This is all out of 100. This makes a grade C, 62 marks, a grade B, 72 marks and a grade A, 82 marks. The research and planning will consist off finding existing posters and double page spreads and annotating around them to show our knowledge and understanding of the way it's set out and why the certain camera angles, shot sizes, editing, sound, mise en scene (location/setting, positioning in the frame, lighting, props/costume/hair and make up, facial expressions/ body language) are all included.
