Poster: Researching Existing Horror Posters

  1. WWW - Helena, you do begin to consider key features used and how they convey meaning and the genre of the film.
EBI - You need to avoid generic statements such as 'it stands out'. This doesn't mean anything. You need to consider the colours in more detail - the connotations and how they link to the genre and the plot of the film. You also need to consider the font in more detail - what impression do you get of the film and how?
With reference to the Sinister poster - much more is needed. Consider the mise en scene - why the isolated room, which looks dark and grimy? Why is the girl facing away from the camera? Consider what she is wearing? Her age? What is the significance of her drawing the blood on the wall? What do you think might be the relationship between the girl and the face on the wall? How does this then link with the title of the film? What does the title of the film actually mean/suggest?
You also need to consider the strap line - what does it suggest and how does it link to the image? What do you learn about the plot of the film?
With reference to the Amityville Horror poster - consider the writing on the wall - 'kach em and kill em' - what is suggested by this? How? Why? Consider the newspaper article in the background. What hint?
Focus on the background in the pictures too - why the old house? Why is there a sense of the picture being torn in two to reveal the house? Why is it so dark and cloudy?
Make sure you proof read your work.

  2. Where is your overall evaluation of your key findings? You need to consider any patterns of repeated conventions you have found evident in horror posters. Do they use similar colours/fonts/images/backgrounds/strap lines?
